think you???ve just been exposed to hiv?

In many areas, there is an option available for folks who might have been exposed to HIV. This exposure could be through unprotected sex or through shared needle use or an accidental needle stick injury. It’s called Post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP and is intended for people who might have been exposed within the past 72 hours. The treatment involves taking HIV meds for about one month in the hope that HIV will clear the body without making someone HIV positive.

The PEP med regimen must be started within the first 72 hours after the possible exposure. If you think that you have been exposed you should seek treatment right away. Either call your doctor or the emergency room at your local hospital. This option can be expensive; in San Francisco it costs about $800- for the month’s supply of meds.

If you are a San Francisco resident and you think you may have been exposed to HIV, call the PEP team at City Clinic. They can offer good advice and let you know if you should come in. Their number is 415-487-5538.

You can also swing by during their PEP walk-in hours:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am - 4pm
Tuesday 1pm - 5pm
Thursday 1pm - 3pm

SF City clinic is located at 356 7th Street, between Folsom and Harrison.
